How EraPin handles your data

Last updated: 23 March 2026

EraPin is a free daily history and geography game. We take privacy seriously, especially because our classroom mode is used by students. This page explains what we collect, why, and how long we keep it.

What We Collect

Daily game (erapin.com): We store a randomly generated player ID in your browser's localStorage. This is not linked to your name, email, or any personal information. We store your daily score in our database linked to this anonymous player ID. We use PostHog for analytics — this collects anonymous usage data like page views, game events, and device type. No IP addresses are stored by PostHog in our configuration.

Classroom mode (class.erapin.com): Students enter a first name to appear on the leaderboard. We store this name alongside the room code and score. No email, no last name, no persistent identifier. PostHog analytics on classroom pages runs in privacy-light mode: no IP capture, no session recording, no cookies, memory-only storage that clears when the tab closes.

Teacher portal (teach.erapin.com): Teachers enter their name and school name to create classrooms. This is stored in our database to associate rooms with teachers. PostHog runs in the same privacy-light mode as the classroom.

What We Don't Collect

We do not collect email addresses (unless you voluntarily provide one in the future for teacher accounts). We do not collect last names from students. We do not collect ages. We do not use advertising cookies or trackers. We do not sell or share data with third parties. We do not use data for advertising.

Third-Party Services

PostHog — anonymous analytics to understand how the game is used. Configured with IP capture disabled on classroom and teacher pages. PostHog privacy policy.

Supabase — database hosting for scores, rooms, and game content. Data stored in the US. Supabase privacy policy.

Vercel — website hosting. Vercel privacy policy.

Google Maps — used on the daily game only (not classroom mode) for location search. Subject to Google's privacy policy.

Wikipedia / Wikimedia Commons — historical photographs displayed in the game are sourced from Wikipedia under Creative Commons licenses.

Data Retention

Daily game scores are stored indefinitely to maintain streaks and the archive feature. Classroom scores and student names are retained for the school year and may be deleted upon teacher request. We plan to implement automatic deletion of classroom data older than 90 days.

Children's Privacy

EraPin's classroom mode is designed to collect minimal data from students. We collect only a first name (which students choose — it can be a nickname) and game scores. No account creation, email, or persistent tracking is involved. Teachers are responsible for determining whether EraPin is appropriate for their classroom under their school's acceptable use policies.

Your Rights

You can clear all locally stored EraPin data by clearing your browser's localStorage for erapin.com. Teachers can request deletion of their classroom data by contacting us at admin@erapin.com.
